About Benson Family Therapy

Healthy communities begin with healthy relationships.

Benson Family Therapy was founded on a simple belief: when individuals, couples, and families are supported, whole communities grow stronger.

How we began

Benson Family Therapy was founded by Mackenzie Brooks Benson, a licensed marriage and family therapist who has had the privilege of witnessing the resilience of individuals, couples, and families as they navigate life's most difficult seasons.

When Mackenzie first opened the practice, she was also a wife and a mother of young children. Like many clinicians, she wanted the flexibility to care well for her clients while being present for her family. Building her own practice gave her that balance — and with it, an important realization: every clinician deserves the opportunity to build a meaningful career without sacrificing their own well-being. That realization became the foundation of Benson Family Therapy.

“It has always been my passion to walk alongside people as they heal, grow, and rediscover hope.”

Mackenzie Brooks Benson, LMFT Owner and Clinical Director

Wellness is how we care

Too often, clinicians enter this profession with tremendous passion, only to find that the demands of the work leave little room to care for themselves. We believe clinician wellness is not a luxury — it is an ethical responsibility. When clinicians are supported, they are more present, more creative, and more compassionate, and they provide better care.

That's why we've built a practice where flexibility, mentorship, collaboration, and sustainable work are valued alongside clinical excellence. Caring for our team is one of the best ways we can care for our community.

Rooted in New Kent

Choosing to build this practice in New Kent was intentional. As one of Virginia's fastest-growing communities, New Kent is in a season of tremendous opportunity: families are putting down roots, neighborhoods are expanding, and the need for accessible, high-quality mental health care continues to grow.

There is something deeply meaningful about growing alongside the community we serve.

Growing the next generation of therapists

Benson Family Therapy trains and mentors clinicians on their path to full licensure through a residency and internship model. Every locality in Virginia is designated a mental health provider shortage area — and practices that invest in developing new clinicians are part of the answer.

For our clients, this means care from therapists who are closely supervised, deeply supported, and continually learning — and a practice where excellence and balance grow together.
